jupynvim opens .ipynb files in Neovim and lets you edit them like a real notebook: cells with borders, inline images, real Jupyter kernels, and an LSP that understands the file. It is built on a Rust backend that speaks the Jupyter wire protocol directly over ZeroMQ, with no Python remote-plugin layer.
It also works over SSH. Point it at a remote machine or an HPC cluster, and the editor stays local while files, kernels, terminals, and search run on the remote.
Highlights
- Native
.ipynbopen and save.:wwrites nbformat v4 JSON, and unknown fields round-trip untouched. - Real Jupyter kernels over ZMQ with HMAC-SHA256. Outputs, including text, errors, PNGs, and animated GIFs, render inside the cell.
- Inline images through the Kitty graphics protocol.
- LSP support (basedpyright, pyright, pylsp, ruff) attached with the kernel’s interpreter.
